John Smith was born in Willoughby, Lincolnshire. The son of an ordinary yeoman farmer, but with great ambitions.
By dint of his own courage and exploits as a soldier, he rose through the ranks of English society to become a Captain of cavalry with his own coat of arms - the mark of a 'gentleman'.
In 1607 CAPTAIN JOHN SMITH became an important leader of the first permanent English settlement in the New World
at Jamestown, Virginia. He ensured its survival by building a relationship with the Virginian Indians - one of whom was the legendary Pocahontas. This DVD commemorates the 400th anniversary of the founding of Jamestown, where English
speaking America began.
His story is told here by Grandmato Emily, with help from Lincolnshire author John Haden and local historian Jean Howard.. The narrative is richly illustrated with maps, paintings and video filmed in the UK and the USA. The Louth Playgoers
provide colourful dramatic highlights, with Timothy Seaman’s beautiful musical arrangements creating an authentic atmosphere. This is an exciting real-life adventure that will appeal to all ages, but is specifically designed for teaching
history and geography to older primary and middle school children (ages 8-11).
